This week I created my own Family OS as part of “AI Runs My Life” series!
What is a Family OS you’re wondering?
It’s basically a private family dashboard for calendars, routines, meals, lists, rewards and a local AI assistant (you can use ChatGPT or Claude which is easier to set up but I preferred local so nothing goes into the cloud).

I basically DIY’d my own version of the viral Hearth or Skylight calendars using AI . I loved this idea because I’m hoping this will keep us all organised as a family.
BUT I didn’t want to pay a subscription ontop of the physical calendar itself (ranges from $500 for the smallest one to RRP $2300 for the large one with wheels - which coincidentally is the one I wanted!).
I saw other DIY enthusiasts buying a small touch screen tablet $200-300 + Raspberry Pi and vibe coding with Claude code. Very cool and I love this idea!
But for me, I didn’t want to hang a screen on the wall (personal preference) with a Raspberry Pi (can heat up and maybe not as powerful for future projects I had in mind). Also may look messy with the Raspberry Pi hanging on the side of tablet. And I’m not super technical… hardware wise which perhaps one day I will learn it but I just wanted to get this done in the easiest way possible 🙂
I’ve seen others just use an ipad or a tablet too!
I decided on the 32 inch jumbo tablet with wheels (like the one above) because I figured it would be fun to wheel it around to look at recipes, do workouts on the mat AND it even has a camera and mic. That would be super handy for meetings and talking to your AI agent.
So I started my journey with ChatGPT to see if I could build something cheaper and better… for $500 (make no mistakes😏).
First, I pasted the link to the screen I wanted with all the features (32 inch tablet with wheels.
I LOVED this (you can do this with Claude and Grok) but I still think ChatGPT does “browser use” the best.
It went to alibaba to literally “chat” to the sales reps and built me this spreadsheet ticking off the requirements, checking how long the company has been in business, total cost to get it delivered to my door and lead time.
Initially I had a hard budget of $500 so it rejected everyone but after seeing so many quotes above this amount I realised it was unrealistic to expect that product for this price.
But that’s the beauty of AI, it doesn’t “think” it is outrageous. It just followed what you asked it to do. And one of these days, it will prove you weren’t too delusional (I will share these for sure)🙂
I was back at square one - lead time was about 40-60 biz days which is crazy. But if you are willing to wait and deal with the admin, it may be worth saving the $$$.
To me, I wanted to get things done faster with less work so I ended up finding one in my local city for $1050 delivered in 2 days.

Now it was time to build the actual Family OS App!
I used ChatGPT but you can of course use Claude Code, Gemini (AI studio), Grok etc.
There was alot of back and forth but I basically told it to replicate something like the Hearth or Skylight calendar.
This was the result!
Here’s how it works:
Syncs all your calendars on 1 page
Keeps your family organised (parents who have kids with multiple activities, birthday parties… you know what I’m talking about 😂)
Connects to my Google calendar but you can do iCal, Outlook too
Chores list
Apparently the most successful kids are the ones who had responsibilities, do things on time, keep their space clean (don’t quote me on that, I saw that on a random Tiktok).

Rewards
To help keep the kids ontop of their chores, they also get converted into rewards. My kids were the most excited for this!

Meals
Organise your weekly meals + shopping list by dragging/dropping recipes from your recipe book!
I made this section where I can paste a recipe URL and it will auto scrape the ingredients + method (without all the ads) into the app!
Shopping List
Auto grabs the recipes you planned for following week and pops it into your shopping list and you can select how you want to view it “Whole List”, “By Ingredient” or “By Meal”
